Outlet Mall As A Cosmic Entity/The Here And Now

I.
In a place out of time, in the future and the past simultaneously, where stale radio hits crackle to the echo of no one, sun-bleached banners of smiling models guffawing into a landscaped void, retail hollows stand bare but for hooks and fallen mannequins, having collected cobwebs and swollen brown water stains

These barren locations bear a false promise of new gleaming outlet paradise “COMING SOON”

A hollow bastion of a metaphor as the spark of nostalgia for late capitalist heyday is inevitably snuffed

My young son and I walk this culture scorched landscape hand in hand; two as one, but across time; messengers from adjacent eras, casting long shadows across this fragmented concrete scab as white and featureless as any of the numberless stars, a single sparkling tear in the endless ocean of time

II.
The friendly waving autumnal trees watching patiently from the outskirts brush cosmic thoughts aside and point to the blue sky, still wild

There is a whole beautiful world all around, a here and now to inhabit

My son’s hand is warm despite the biting October breezes and I hold it tighter, intending never to let go
